Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy Resigns Over Portfolio Dispute

Ramalinga Reddy, Karnataka's Minister for Water Resources, has resigned from the state cabinet, citing a breach of promise by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar regarding the allocation of the Bengaluru Urban portfolio. Reddy announced his decision from his office in Koramangala, Bengaluru, stating that he would leave the acceptance of his resignation to the party leadership. Initially informed in 2023 that he would receive the Bengaluru Development portfolio, Reddy was instead given the Transport portfolio, leading to dissatisfaction and discussions involving senior leaders, including former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. During the current government formation, Reddy was assured by Shivakumar and his brother, D.K. Suresh, that he would receive the Bengaluru Urban portfolio after 2.5 years. However, he was ultimately assigned the Water Resources portfolio, prompting his resignation. Despite his resignation, Reddy will continue as an MLA and remain in the Congress party. Chief Minister Shivakumar responded by describing Reddy as a close friend and senior leader, expressing confidence in resolving the issue. Reddy, however, indicated that his decision was final and that he would not accept the Bengaluru Development portfolio even if offered now.
