Kunal Kamra performs at Koramangala comedy club amid heavy security after Hindutva group seeks show cancellation
Comedian Kunal Kamra performed at The Underground Comedy Club in Koramangala, Bengaluru, on Sunday, August 2, under a heavy police presence that included Karnataka State Reserve Police personnel and Bengaluru city police officers stationed outside the venue. Attendees were required to pass through barricades, undergo frisking, and leave their helmets outside before entering. One audience member told The News Minute that the level of security was unusual even by the standards of a show expected to attract some controversy. Kamra acknowledged the arrangements at the close of his set, thanking Bengaluru Police.
The show had originally been scheduled for August 1 but was rescheduled by a day. The venue was also changed: tickets had initially been sold for performances at URU in Whitefield between August 3 and August 6, but ticketing platform District subsequently listed The Underground Comedy Club in Koramangala as the location for all four upcoming shows. Kamra announced the venue change on social media, stating that Whitefield ticket holders would receive refunds and could purchase fresh tickets for the Koramangala dates.
The changes followed a memorandum submitted by the Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti to Bengaluru Police seeking cancellation of Kamra's shows in Whitefield. The organisation alleged that remarks made by the comedian during a recent performance had hurt Hindu religious sentiments and could disturb law and order and communal harmony. Days earlier, a member of the group had posted on X questioning why Kamra was being permitted to perform in Bengaluru.
Responding on August 1, Kamra invited members of the organisation to meet him at the Whitefield police station to debate comedy and culture while he sought permission to perform. He later posted a photograph with columnist Aakar Patel outside the station, implying no representatives of the group had appeared. Bengaluru Police has not publicly commented on the memorandum or on the security arrangements made for the performance.
