Kunal Kamra relocates Bengaluru stand-up shows to Koramangala's Underground Comedy Club after Whitefield venue opposition

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has cancelled his scheduled performances at URU Whitefield in Bengaluru and relocated the shows to Underground Comedy Club in Koramangala, following sustained opposition from right-wing activists over several days.

Kamra visited Whitefield police station in person to formally inform authorities of his decision to withdraw from the Whitefield venue. A senior police official confirmed the visit, stating that Kamra cited opposition from Hindutva activists as the reason for the cancellation. The controversy was triggered after Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti filed a formal complaint with Bengaluru Police requesting a ban on Kamra's performances, alleging that his acts posed a threat to public law, order, and harmony, and that he had disrespected Hindu deities.

Kamra addressed ticket holders directly on the social media platform X, announcing that shows scheduled from Monday through Thursday had been moved to Underground Comedy Club in Koramangala. He noted that BookMyShow would automatically process refunds for Whitefield tickets and encouraged fans to purchase new tickets for the Koramangala venue, which has a significantly smaller seating capacity than the original location.

Despite the abrupt venue change, Kamra proceeded with his performances at the scheduled times. Attendees at Tuesday's shows reported having to pass through police barricades and security checks before entering the comedy club, reflecting the heightened security arrangements put in place for the events.

The episode highlights ongoing tensions around live comedy performances in India, particularly for satirical comedians navigating political opposition. The Koramangala shows are expected to continue through the week at Underground Comedy Club.
