Kunal Kamra shifts Bengaluru shows to Koramangala's Underground Comedy Club after Hindutva group protests Whitefield venue

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has relocated his Bengaluru shows from URU Whitefield to the Underground Comedy Club in Koramangala after a Hindutva group sought cancellation of his performances, police confirmed on Monday.

Kamra was originally scheduled to perform at URU Whitefield from August 3. The change came after the Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti submitted a petition to Bengaluru Police requesting cancellation of the show. The group alleged that Kamra had disrespected Hindu deities and raised concerns about religious harmony and law and order.

On Sunday, Kamra visited the Whitefield police station and personally informed a senior police officer that he had decided not to proceed with the Whitefield event. Police were clear that the comedian had not been barred from performing — the decision to move the shows was taken voluntarily amid the opposition.

In a post on X, Kamra announced that his Monday through Thursday shows would be held at the Underground Comedy Club in Koramangala. He stated that BookMyShow would process refunds for tickets already purchased for the Whitefield venue, and directed fans to purchase fresh tickets for the relocated performances.

The shows at the Koramangala venue are set to proceed as planned. The episode highlights ongoing tensions around stand-up comedy performances in India that touch on religious or political themes, with activist groups increasingly petitioning authorities to intervene ahead of such events.
