Chennai Metro Phase-2 Reaches 52.55% Completion

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has reported significant progress in the Phase-2 Metro Rail project, achieving 52.55% overall completion across its three main corridors. The extensive project, valued at ₹63,246 crore, covers a total of 116.1 km and includes Corridor 3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri, Corridor 4 from Lighthouse to Poonamallee, and Corridor 5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. The network will feature 118 stations, with 43 of them being underground, spanning 42.6 km.

Construction for this phase began in November 2020, with tunnelling operations commencing in October 2022. Notable progress has been made in tunnelling through key areas such as Adyar, Kodambakkam, Panagal Park, Royapettah, Mylapore, and Mandaveli. The elevated corridor works are advancing well, with completion expected by 2027, while the underground sections are targeted for completion by 2028.

The first Metro service in Phase-2 is anticipated to start soon on the Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani stretch. This project is poised to significantly enhance urban mobility, alleviate traffic congestion, and improve connectivity to major residential, commercial, and IT hubs throughout Chennai.
