Southern Railway to Expand Parking at Perungudi MRTS Station

The Southern Railway is set to expand parking facilities at the Perungudi railway station, part of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), due to the current parking yard being fully utilized. The extension of MRTS services from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount has led to a rise in commuter numbers, increasing the demand for parking at Perungudi station, a key access point to the IT corridor. Commuters, including S. Murali Sundar from Taramani, report difficulties in finding parking, often leaving vehicles unprotected outside the station. A large vacant area owned by the railway is currently occupied by commercial vehicles. Commuters emphasize the need for safe and protected parking spaces. Southern Railway officials acknowledge the issue and plan to develop additional parking on adjacent vacant land, which is currently illegally occupied by commercial vehicles. A tender for this development will be issued soon. The official also mentioned that monthly parking passes are available for the public, which are being utilized.
