GCC to Open First Food Court in Adyar in Two Months

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is preparing to launch its first food court in Adyar, located on Indira Nagar 3rd Avenue, within the next two months. This initiative, costing approximately ₹4.24 crore, aims to provide a new dining destination for food enthusiasts in the city. The food court, modeled after the Chennai Metro Rail Limited's concept, will house around 30 shops and offer dedicated parking spaces. The project involves the demolition of part of an unused shopping complex owned by the corporation, with foundation work already underway. The facility will include smaller units of 110 square feet and larger units of 220 square feet, accommodating various food and beverage outlets.

The food court will provide parking for 20 two-wheelers and 16 cars, along with a common dining area for visitors. The GCC has opted for a revenue-sharing model, leasing the entire facility to a single operator who will sublet the stalls to different branded outlets. This approach is expected to ensure better management and higher revenue generation for the corporation.

Local resident K Hari Kumar noted that the area becomes crowded in the evenings, with many people currently eating on the roadside. The planned food court is anticipated to organize street food vendors and enhance the customer experience. Depending on public response, the GCC may consider establishing similar facilities in other parts of Chennai.
