Chennai Metro Phase-2 Reaches 52.55% Completion

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has reported significant progress in the Phase-2 Metro Rail project, achieving 52.55% completion across its three main corridors. The expansive project, valued at ₹63,246 crore, covers a total of 116.1 km and includes Corridor 3 (Madhavaram–Siruseri, 45.4 km), Corridor 4 (Lighthouse–Poonamallee, 26.1 km), and Corridor 5 (Madhavaram–Sholinganallur, 44.6 km). The network will feature 118 stations, with 43 of them being underground, spanning 42.6 km. Construction commenced in November 2020, and tunnelling operations began in October 2022. Key tunnelling milestones have been achieved in areas such as Adyar, Kodambakkam, Panagal Park, Royapettah, Mylapore, and Mandaveli. The elevated corridor works are progressing well, with completion expected by 2027, while the underground sections are slated for completion by 2028. Notably, the elevated stretches between Poonamallee, Porur, and Vadapalani have been completed, and track-laying is underway in various sections. Officials anticipate that the first Phase-2 Metro service will soon commence on the Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani stretch. This project aims to significantly enhance urban mobility, alleviate traffic congestion, and improve connectivity to key residential, commercial, and IT hubs throughout Chennai.
