Fire at Pallikaranai Dump Yard Destroys Over 100 Vehicles, Affects Velachery

A major fire erupted at the Pallikaranai dump yard on Thursday, causing widespread panic in south Chennai as it spread to a nearby vehicle holding area, destroying over 100 seized vehicles. The fire began within the dump yard and quickly engulfed the adjacent area where the vehicles were parked, leading to significant property damage. The Greater Chennai Corporation controls the land where the affected vehicles were stored. Thick black smoke from the fire covered large areas, including Pallikaranai and Velachery, disrupting traffic and causing concern among residents. Eyewitnesses reported seeing towering flames and dense smoke from several kilometers away, as combustible materials in the dump yard fueled the fire. Fire and Rescue Services personnel, along with multiple fire tenders and water tankers, were deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. The smoke caused visibility issues and inconvenience for commuters, particularly along the Medavakkam–Velachery corridor, where traffic was severely delayed. Authorities worked for several hours to bring the situation under control. While no casualties or injuries were reported, the incident resulted in significant property loss. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire and assess any potential safety lapses. The Pallikaranai dump yard has experienced similar incidents in the past, raising concerns about fire safety and waste management practices at the site.
