Fire at Pallikaranai Dumpyard Destroys Vehicles, Affects South Chennai Traffic

A significant fire broke out at the Greater Chennai Corporation's dumpyard in Pallikaranai on Thursday morning, leading to the destruction of heaps of garbage and several seized vehicles. The fire, which started around 8:30 am, was fueled by large quantities of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) waste, a highly combustible material. Strong winds exacerbated the situation, spreading dense smoke across the southern suburbs of Chennai and disrupting traffic on major roads. Approximately 50 two-wheelers and several cars were destroyed in the blaze.

Corporation officials suggested that the RDF waste might have ignited due to friction, with high ambient temperatures possibly contributing to the fire's outbreak. Despite the rapid spread of the flames, the fire was contained before reaching a nearby baling unit. The corporation had water tankers on standby, which allowed for a swift response even before fire tenders arrived.

Residents in areas such as Madipakkam, Pallikaranai, Mylai Balaji Nagar, Perungudi, and Thuraipakkam reported breathing difficulties due to the smoke and the smell of burning waste. Traffic on the Tambaram-Velachery Road was severely affected, causing delays for bus commuters, auto passengers, and two-wheeler riders. The Pallavaram-Thuraipakkam Radial Road also experienced disruptions. Firefighting efforts involved six fire tenders from various localities, including Tambaram, Guindy, Velachery, Medavakkam, and Adyar, along with water tankers from Chennai Metro Water. The fire was brought under control after more than four hours of effort.
